Choosing the Anti-Aging Injectable
That’s Right for You |
| |
|
Women are just looking younger
nowadays! Since the Food & Drug
Administration (FDA) approved Botox
for its wrinkle reducing properties
just five years ago (just five!),
anti-aging has never been the same.
Almost immediately after approval,
other products hit the market.
Why? Largely because the results
were phenomenal; dramatic reduction
in age-related wrinkles—frown lines,
crow’s feet, everything. Hollywood
starlets as well as en mode Main
Street moms have never looked the
same. |
| |
|
Though there are other Anti-Aging
Injectables (AAIs), Botox, Juvéderm,
and Restylane have established
themselves as the leaders. So are
there differences between them?
Absolutely. The human face is
simply too complex for any one
product to do it all. The following
is a quick look at exactly what
these elixirs of youth do best and
how you can use them best on your
particular face. |
| |
|
Botox is still very widely used for wrinkle
reduction because the results speak for themselves.
Derived from highly purified botulinum toxin, Botox
is a muscular paralyzing agent that works wonders on
some of the most tell-tale signs of facial aging;
stubborn vertical frown lines between the eyes, and
unsightly crow’s feet occurring in the outside folds
of the eyes. It delivers consistent results and is
well tolerated by all patients. After the world got
comfortable with using an actual paralytic toxin for
wrinkle reduction, Botox has never left center
stage. |
|
|
|
| |
|
|
| |
According to San Francisco
plastic surgeon William
Binder, it’s important to
get someone who really knows
how to use Botox in order to
get the most out of it. In
the hands of an artist, your
skin will look much smoother
and younger. The most
common mistake is using too
much. Applied improperly by
an unskilled practitioner,
well, you’ve seen the
results. There’s no need to
name names, but think of
some of the Hollywood faces
that you’ve seen that look
like plastic surgery
disasters. Chances are that
part of what’s going on is
the Botox mask; the flat,
unemotional, almost shiny,
sometimes reddish look.
Luckily, this will wear off
in four to six months. |
|
| |
|
|
| |
What Botox can’t do,
Juvéderm (usually) can, and
it’s become wildly popular
recently. As we age, the
proteins in the lower layers
of our skin degrade
somewhat. The result is skin
that lacks youthful tone and
plumpness and has many small
wrinkles. While good
moisturizers (ask your Body
Beautiful technician for
what’s best) can plump the
skin somewhat, they have
their limitations.
Moisturizers just can’t add
much volume to the skin; and
the volume they do add is
largely limited to a shallow
layer of the dermis. |
|
| |
|
|
| |
Juvéderm is usually the
answer to this inevitable
thinning of the skin.
Technically speaking, it is
a hyaluronic-acid filler.
Juvéderm has the consistency
of a gel, and is one of the
only treatments that can
actually add volume to the
skin. Megan Fox is a
perfect example of what Juvѐderm
can do, as are Jennifer
Aniston and Jessica Alba.
The list is long and the
results are spectacular.
|
|
| |
|
|
| |
Of particular interest is
how long Juvéderm lasts.
While Botox can wear off in
four months, a typical
Juvéderm treatment commonly
lasts nine months! There
are three “thicknesses” of
Juvéderm, the first two are
for mild to moderate skin
thinning and fine wrinkles,
the third for more severe
aging damage. |
|
| |
|
|
| |
Juvéderm is arguably the
hottest AAI today. It is
everywhere in Hollywood. It
delivers awesome results for
the tough-to-treat wrinkles
that run from the folds of
the nose to the corners of
the mouth. Turn on the TV
and have a look for
yourself; you’ll see very
few of these infamously
stubborn signs of
aging—that’s Juvéderm. |
|
| |
|
|
| |
What about the lips? What
Juvéderm does for facial
skin, Restylane does for
lips. Restylane is another
hyaluronic-acid filler that
is particularly suited to
treating thinning lips
associated with aging. Once
again, look at Megan Fox.
Sure, she’s naturally
beautiful, but she’s also on
record as being a very
satisfied Restylane user.
For women who naturally have
thinner, less voluptuous
lips, Restylane can be
perfect for them. Also note
that results typically last
up to six months! |
|
| |
|
|
| |
In summary, Botox is still,
and probably always will be,
a superb treatment for
stubborn frown lines and
crow’s feet. |
|
| |
|
|
| |
Juvéderm is huge now for its
ability to add tone and
fullness to thinning skin
and stubborn mouth
wrinkles. It is extremely
versatile and can last up to
nine months. Restylane is an
excellent alternative to
more invasive collagen
plumping procedures for
movie star voluptuous lips.

Ask your doctor if BOTOX Cosmetic
is right for you! |
|
| |
|
|
| |
 |
|
| |
 |
|
| |
|
|
| |
Millions of men and women of all
skin colors and ethnicities have realized the
benefits of being treated with BOTOX Cosmetic (Botulinum
Toxin Type A). You can too! When administered by an
experienced physician, you can still smile, frown,
and look surprised without those lines between your
brows. For more information, talk to your doctor or
visit
www.BotoxCosmetic.com. Ask your doctor the one
question that really matters: IS BOTOX Cosmetic
right for you? |
|
| |
|
|
| |
What is BOTOX Cosmetic? |
|
| |
BOTOX has been used therapeutically
for more than 17 years to treat a variety of medical
conditions. It is approved in more than 75 countries
and remains the most-studied botulinum toxin and one
of the most widely researched medicines in the
world. In 2002, the same formulation- under the
label BOTOX Cosmetic- was approved by the US Food
and Drug Administration (FDA) for treatment of
moderate to severe frown lines between the brows in
people ages 18 to 65. |
|
| |
|
|
| |
How does BOTOX Cosmetic work? |
|
| |
During treatment, very low doses of
BOTOX Cosmetic are administered via a few tiny
injections directly into the muscles responsible for
frown lines between the brows. By blocking the
release of a chemical that causes these muscles to
contract, BOTOX Cosmetic enables them to relax. The
effects are very localized and, when administered by
an experienced physician, do not affect your ability
to smile, laugh, or otherwise show expression. Botox
Cosmetic is the only product of its kind that has
been approved for us in this area. |
|
| |
|
|
| |
|
What are the common side effects? |
|
The most common side effects
following inject include temporary eyelid droop and
nausea. Localized pain, infection, inflammation,
tenderness, swelling, redness, and/or
bleeding/bruising may be associated with the
injection. Patients with certain neuromuscular
disorders such as ALS, myasthenia gravis, or
Lambert-Eaton syndrome may be at increased risk of
serious side effects. |
| |
|
Is there any chance of serious side effects? |
|
Serious heart problems and serious
allergic reactions have been reported rarely. If you
think you’re having an allergic reaction or other
unusual symptoms, such as difficulty swallowing,
speaking, or breathing, call your doctor
immediately. |
| |
|
What is the treatment like? |
|
BOTOX Cosmetic is a quick and
minimally invasive procedure consisting of a few
tiny injections. Your doctor will determine exactly
where to administer these injections to achieve the
best results for you. No anesthesia is required,
though he or she may choose to numb the area with a
cold pack or anesthetic cream prior to injecting.
The entire procedure takes approximately 10 minutes,
and there is no downtime afterward. Discomfort is
minimal and brief. Localized pain, infection,
inflammation, tenderness, swelling, redness, and/or
bleeding/bruising may be associated with the
injection. |
| |
|
Will I still be able to make facial expressions? |
|
Although you may see a marked
improvement, a treatment with BOTOX Cosmetic does
not make you look like you’ve “had work done.” The
muscle activity that causes frown lines is simply
reduced, so you can still frown or look surprised
without the wrinkles and creases between your brows.
|
|
|
| |
|
|
| |
How soon will I see a difference? |
|
| |
You can expect to see results within
days after your treatment, and the appearance of the
area between your brows may continue to improve for
you up to a week. By day 30 in a phase 3 clinical
study, 89% of patients judged the severity of their
frown lines between their brows as moderate or
better. Visible results have been shown to last up
to 4 months. After that, many patients are ready to
return for a follow-up treatment. Your own results
may vary- be sure to talk to your doctor about what
you can expect. |
|
| |
|
|
| |
How do I know if BOTOX Cosmetic is right for me? |
|
| |
If you are between the ages of 18
and 65 with moderate to sever frown lines between
your brows, you may be a candidate for BOTOX
Cosmetic. Ask your doctor if BOTOX Cosmetic is right
for you. |
|
| |
|
|
| |
How
can I be sure I’m getting real BOTOX Cosmetic? |
|
| |
Only licensed and trained healthcare
professionals have the experience necessary to
administer BOTOX Cosmetic. Allergan, Inc., the maker
of BOTOX Cosmetic, is the only source for healthcare
professionals to purchase the product, and each US
FDA-approved vial label has the “Allergan” hologram.

How
parentheses appear… |
|
| |
As you age, your skin changes. For
example, it reduces production of a naturally
hydrating substance called hyaluronic acid (HA).
Over time, the loss of HA in your skin results in
facial wrinkles and folds, like those “parentheses”
around your mouth. |
|
| |
|
|
| |
…and
disappear |
|
| |
JUVEDERM injectable gel replaces the
HA your skin has lost, bringing back its volume and
smoothing away facial wrinkles and folds. A
breakthrough in HA dermal, fillers, JUVEDERM is the
first smooth consistency HA gel and the only HA
filler that’s FDA approved to last up to a year!
|
|
| |
|
|
| |
What makes JUVEDERM different? |
|
| |
While other HA fillers on the market
have a more granular consistency, JUVEDERM
injectable gel is the first smoothconsistency HA
gel. This is due to an innovative manufacturing
process called HYLACROSS technology. HYLACROSS gives
JUVEDERM its unique smooth gel properties as well as
an optimal gel structure that holds up over time.
That’s why JUVEDERM injectable gel is the only HA
filler that’s FDA approved to last up to 1 year.

Restylane Touch® - A New Instant
Aesthetic Treatment |
|
| |
|
|
| |
Q-Med, the Swedish bio-technology
company which makes Restylane, the
UK’s leading injectable filler for
aesthetic beauty treatments,
announces the arrival of Restylane
Touch®.
Press Release from Q-Med
What does Restylane Touch® do?
Particularly suited for banishing
those very fine give-away lines
across the forehead, around the top
lip, and diminishing the appearance
of crow’s feet, Restylane Touch® is
a welcome addition to the Restylane®
treatment range.
Women, and a growing number of men,
are looking for anti-ageing
solutions with proven safety and
efficacy thaat enhance looks in a
subtle and natural way - a gentle
lift to the brow, lines smoothed but
not to the detriment of facial
expression, lips that look a little
fuller but still feel natural and
soft.
With the arrival of Touch, Restylane®
is now able to offer the total
facial rejuvenation experience. The
combination of new Restylane Touch®
with Restylane® and Restylane
Perlane® creates a one stop
treatment of choice for diminishing
lines in all areas of the face,
revitalising looks instantly and
providing even greater patient
satisfaction.
What is it?
Like its sister products, Restylane®
and Restylane Perlane®, Restylane
Touch® is made from a non-animal
source of hyaluronic acid (HA). HA
occurs naturally in our bodies and
attracts water to plump up our skin.
As we age, HA diminishes and facial
lines and wrinkles start to appear.
Restylane comes to the rescue by
plumping the skin to smooth out
lines, wrinkles and folds.
How does Restylane Touch® differ
from Restylane® and Restylane
Perlane®?
The gel particles in Restylane
Touch® are considerably finer than
those found in Restylane® and
Restylane Perlane®. As a result,
Restylane Touch® is a much smoother
gel that is ideal for treating
superficial and fine, tell-tale
lines and wrinkles. Restylane® and
Restylane Perlane®, with their
larger gel particles, work best on
deeper facial lines and folds, such
as the naso-labial lines which run
from the nose down to the mouth, and
deep, vertical lines between the eye
brows. Restylane Perlane®, which has
the largest particles of the three
products, is particularly suited to
the body of the lips, whereas
Restylane Touch® might be selected
to enhance the border of the lips,
and to diminish vertical lines along
the upper lip.
Although the gel particle size in
Restylane Touch® is smaller than its
sister products, its ability to
plump the skin and smooth lines is
comparable to the established
characteristics of Restylane®.
Depending on the area of the face
being treated, practitioners might
use all three Restylane® products
together to achieve the patient’s
desired results.
Who is Restylane Touch® for?
Like the existing Restylane®
products, Restylane Touch® is ideal
for women who seek a non-animal,
safe and natural facial rejuvenation
treatment. Restylane® presents a
treatment choice for people who are
Botox® or collagen shy.
Botox® is not an option for
everyone. There are those who are
resistant to the idea of a treatment
derived from a toxin (botulinum
toxin) and are worried about the
long-term side effects. Unlike
Restylane®, Botox® is injected into
the muscles associated with facial
expression. As a result, these
muscles are relaxed and cannot
contract - thereby reducing lines.
However, facial expression can often
be lost as a result. At a more
fundamental level, for many the
ability to grimace or frown - or
indeed raise their eyebrows - is
part of their essential character
and personality.
Unlike collagen, and several other
HA soft tissue fillers (e.g.
Hylaform®), Restylane Touch® and its
companion products contain no animal
derivatives. Apart from the ethical
argument against the use of animals
for aesthetic purposes, with
Restylane® there is no risk of
disease transmission, or allergic
reactions in patients who are
sensitive to beef, chicken and dairy
products. The inconvenience of a
skin test, which - with some
injectables - usually takes place
two weeks prior to treatment, is
avoided with Restylane®. |

Important Treatment Considerations for Patients |
|
| |
In the US, JUVEDERM injectable gel
is indicated for injection into the mid-to-deep
dermis for correction of moderate to sever facial
wrinkles and folds (such as nasolabial folds) and is
generally well tolerated. The most commonly reported
side effects are temporary injection-site redness,
swelling, paint/tenderness, firmness, lumps/bumps
and bruising. Exposure of the treated area to
excessive sun and extreme cold weather should be
minimized until any initial sweeling and redness
have resolved. If laser treatment, chemical peel, or
any other procedure based on active dermal response
is considered after treatment with JUVEDERM
injectable gel, there is a possible risk of an
inflammatory reaction at the treatment site.
Patients who are using substances that can prolong
bleeding, such as aspirin or ibuprofen, as with any
injection, may experience increased bruising or
bleeding at injection site. You should inform your
physician before treatment if you are using these
types of substances. As with all skin-injection
procedures, there is a risk of infection. JUVEDERM
injectable gel should be used with caution in
paitnets on immunosuppressive therapy, or therapy
used to decrease the body’s immune response, as
there may be an increased risk of infection. The
safety of JUVEDERM injectable gel in patients with a
history of excessive scaring (eg, hypertrophic
scaring and keloid formations) and pigmentation
disorders has not been studied. |
|
| |
|
|
| |
JUVEDERM injectable gel should not
be used in patients who have severe allergies marked
by a history of anaphlaxis or history or presence of
multiple severe allergies. JUVEDERM injectable gel
should not be used in patients with a history of
allergies to Gram-positive bacterial proteins. The
safety of JUVEDERM injectable gel for use during
pregnancy, in breastfeeding females, or in patients
under 18 years has not been established. The safety
and effectiveness of JUVEDERM injectable gel for the
treatment of the areas other than facial wrinkles
and folds (such as lips) have not been established
in controlled clinical studies. |
